The 10 best keyword research tools

1. semrush

Semrush works a little differently than the other tools I'm going to introduce you to.

Instead of a startKeyword to enter and a long list of Keyword-ideas, shows you Semrush the keywords for which your competitors are already ranking.

And this is how it works:

First, enter the domain name of a competitor in the field at the top of the page.

If you are dealing with SEO in a country outside of Germany (e.g. in Google.co.uk), you can display information about this specific market. Simply select the country from this menu:

Next, take a look at the "Organic research" area:

Here you can find out what the various terms in this section mean:

  • "Keywords" is the estimated number of monthly organic keywords for which your page ranks on Google.
  • Traffic is the estimated number of monthly visitors.

So if you have a domain with a lot of organic search traffic, but low Traffic-costs, you know that it is ranking for keywords that do not lead to purchases.

The actual value of Semrush however, lies in the organic keyword data:

This field shows you keywords for which your competitors are ranking.

Then you will get a list with all keywords for which the website or URL ranks. On this page alone you will usually find a handful of good keywords.

But if you need more ideas, go back to the "Organic search" overview and take a look at the "Competitors" in the menu bar.

There you will see the competition of the site on the first page:

If you click on one of these results, you can see the exact search queries they rank for.

There will be some overlap with what you've just seen, but you'll also (usually) find some real gems.

You can use your Semrush-Search also with a Keyword instead of starting with a competitor's website. Semrush shows you a "Phrase Match Report", i.e. a list of Long Tail Keywords, which will change the entered Keyword included. This is very helpful for finding long-tail variations of head and body keywords.

For example, if you are looking for the Keyword "dietary supplements", you will quickly realize that it is simply too competitive.

However, Semrush will show you long-tail variants like "take supplements", which are much easier to rank for.

My favorite feature: Keyword Magic

This tool pulls Keyword-suggestions from Semrush's huge database of over 21 billion terms.

2. soovle

Soovle provides you with suggestions for keywords from Google, YouTube, Bing, Yahoo, Amazon and more.

This allows you to find untapped keywords that your competitors don't know about.

My favorite function: Saved suggestions

With Soovle's "drag and drop" saved suggestions feature, you can add your favoriteKeyword-Save ideas easily.

You can then download your favorite keywords into a CSV file.

3. google search console

The Google Search Console is not a traditional Keyword-Research Tool.

But it has a feature that makes finding great keywords easier.

The function?

Performance Report.

This report lists the pages on your website that receive the most clicks from Google.

So: How can you use this function for the Keyword-Use research?

Quite simply: use them to find "opportunity keywords".

Opportunity keywords are keywords that you can use for a specific Keyword rank between 8-20 in Google. And with a little extra on-page SEO, you can boost your Ranking improve significantly.

For example, my average Ranking for the Keyword "Keyphrase" at 10.7.

This Keyword is an opportunity Keyword. If I optimize my page for "SEO-Tool", my Ranking for this term.

My favorite feature: Google Analytics + Google Search Console

Did you know that you can change your Google Search Console and Google Analytics-accounts?

If you do this, you will receive more detailed Keyword-data than with each tool on its own.

4. ahrefs keywords explorer

Ahrefs has recently introduced a new and improved "Keywords Explorer".

What I like most about Keyword Explorer likes is this:

It gives you SUPER detailed information on each Keyword.

Of course you get the data you expect (like the Search volume). But you also get a breakdown of the competition on the first page and how many searchers actually click on a result.

My favorite feature: Keyword-Difficulty

Most Keyword-Research tools only give you vague information about the difficulty (such as "easy" or "difficult"). Or a score (such as "89/100").

But Ahrefs tells you EXACTLY how many Backlinks you need to rank on the first page of Google.

5. SECockpit

The Swiss Army Knife among the Keyword-Research Tools.

As with any other Keyword-tool you enter at SECockpit Keyword and you will receive a list of results.

What makes SECockpit unique, however, are the built-in features that allow you to learn a lot about search trends, organic competition and Traffic-estimates.

This means that it is a tool developed primarily for SEO professionals.

Of course, newcomers can also benefit from this tool. But there is no doubt that SECockpit is intended for people who have nothing but SEO on their minds.

If you're brand new to SEO, you might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of features in this tool. But if you're looking for a lot of depth, you'll probably get your money's worth.

And this is how it works.

When you log in, you will automatically be taken to your Dashboardwhere you can create projects for specific keywords or you can start right away with a single keyword search.

To start with the Keyword-research, click on "Keyword-Start search":

Then enter a startKeyword in the field "Keyword-phrase":

You can get even more results if you Google Suggest, related searches and synonyms from Google Ads include:

When you are finished, click on "Save and close" and the tool will get to work.

If you have ever used the Google Keyword-planner, the data here should look familiar to you.

The columns "Term", "Monthly search queries" and "CPC" come directly from the GKP:

(The only difference is that the CPC in the GKP is called "Top of page bid")

So: What do the other information in SECockpit mean?

Under the "Niche" column you will see a row of green bars:

This bar is a single metric that shows the competition on the first page, the monthly Search volume and the commercial intent. In other words: whether this search query is a good choice overall or not. The bigger the bar, the better the Keyword.

Next to the monthly search queries you will see a series of orange bars labeled "Top results":

This bar shows how difficult it is to find the right Keyword to rank based on the current top 10 results.

And if you're looking for a Keyword you will get a breakdown of the search results for this Keyword.

If you do this, SECockpit will show you important competitive metrics for the top 10 pages in the results, such as the Moz Domain Authority and the sum of the Backlinks:

This is a great way to quickly assess the competition without the SERPs individually.

When you return to the keywords page, you can add at least 20 more columns to the results:

For example, you can analyze the relationship between the competition and the Search volume of the keyword. Or you can get a comparison of the estimated traffic you'll get if you rank in the top 3 for that keyword. Keyword come. And much more.

My favorite function: Filter

You can use over 100 filters to find the keywords you are looking for.

For example, do you only want keywords that are searched for at least 10,000 times per month? No problem.

Or maybe you want terms that have the best ratio of Search volume and competition. No problem.

6. google keyword planner

Use the huge Keyword-database from Google.

The GKP is, compared to most other Keyword-Research tools quite unimpressive.

So why would you use it?

Because the data you receive with it comes directly from Google.

My favorite feature: "Top of page bid"

This is the amount that other advertisers pay for a Keyword offer

For example, if you see a top-of-page bid of €10, people will spend an average of €10 per click.

The higher this number is, the more commercial intentions the searcher naturally has.

7. keywordTool.io

Here is another Google Suggest Scraper (just like UberSuggest and Soovle).

What makes KeywordTool unique?

Two things:

First: KeywordTool gives you MANY Keyword-suggestions.

For example, I did a search for "SEO" and got 1,394 relevant keywords. Not bad.

Secondly, you can easily filter, break down or expand the results to find the right keywords for you.

My favorite function: Analyze competitors

This is a very cool feature that I've seen in many other Keyword-Research tools do not find.

Simply enter the website of a competitor and the tool will generate a list of Keyword-ideas based on the content of this website.

For example, when I Wolf of SEO in the tool, I get keywords that I would expect.

(Like "SEO" and "Blog")

However, I have also come across terms that I do not use on my website, but which are closely linked to the topics I write about.

(e.g. "Digital Marketing" and "Backlinks check")

8. moz keyword explorer

The Keyword-Explorer from Moz is ideal for creating "lateral" Keyword-to find ideas.

For example, take a startKeyword like "weight loss". As with most other tools, you will get a list of closely related keywords.

What makes Moz unique, however, is that it is SMART.

This means that you will receive suggestions that you are unlikely to find anywhere else.

My favorite feature: "Organic CTR" and "Priority"

These two great features show you how many clicks you can expect from your target keyword.

Organic CTR is the number of clicks you can expect to get if you make the top 10. When a SERP for example, contains a lot of PPC ads, news results and a Knowledge Graph, your CTR be low.

For priority, CTR, Search volume and difficulty are taken into account. It is an "overall assessment" of whether you have achieved a certain Keyword should target or not.

So if you are talking about Keyword-data, you can use this one metric to find the keywords that give you the most value. Traffic from Google will bring.

9. keywords everywhere

Experience the Search volume (and more) wherever you are.

Keywords Everywhere is a paid Keyword-research tool that Keyword-data on 10 websites including Ebay and Amazon.

This way you don't have to include keywords in the Google Keyword Planner copy and paste. The data will be saved in your ChromeBrowser displayed. Very cool.

My favorite feature: "People also search for"

Get a list of keywords related to your search term in Google search results.

The great thing about this feature is that you can find keywords that your target customers are searching for, even though they're not searching for what you're selling.

For example, if I search for "SEO Tools", I see terms like "Google Keyword Planner SEO" and "Free SEO analysis".

There are two ways to use Google Trends for the Keyword-research:

First, you can search for a specific Keyword search...

...and take a look at the "Related search queries" section.

Second, you can see if a Keyword gaining in popularity.

Why is this important?

Let's say you're arguing between two keywords:

"Audi" and "BMW".

As you can see, interest in the "BMW" brand is higher than that of the "Audi" brand.

This is not to say that "Audi" is a bad Keyword would be. But the fact that a keyword is trending downwards or is generally worse is a factor you should keep in mind when choosing your next keyword.
