What is AltaVista?

AltaVista was one of the first and most important search engines on the Internet, launched in 1995 by the Digital Research Labs of the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in Palo Alto. Originally intended as a technology demonstration for DEC servers, AltaVista enabled a comprehensive full-text search and set new standards in the way information was found on the web.
