Once again this year, there is a great deal of interest in the election of the youth word. We took a closer look at Germans' interest and analyzed which words have the best chance of winning. The controversial term "Talahon" in particular is the clear favorite for the 2024 youth word race. For our analysis, we evaluated the monthly search volumes of the ten youth words up for selection in over 180,000 Google search queries from January to September 2024 and compiled a ranking.
The result:
"Talahon" dominates the trends
With 142,000 monthly Google searches, "Talahon" tops the list of youth words in 2024. In second place is "aura" with 16,000 queries. In third place with 8,400 monthly searches is the word "yolo", which was already on the list last year. "Pyrotechnics" follows in fourth place in the context of the youth word with 8,000 monthly Google searches. Digga" - also nominated last year - also remains a popular term with 4,400 queries, while the alternative spelling "Diggah" is searched for much less frequently with 1,100 queries.
Little interest in unusual idioms
Terms such as "Yurr" with 200 Google queries and "hell no" with 100 queries seem to be less well known. The phrase "No Pascal, I don't think so" is searched for 80 times a month. The only words with fewer queries in the context of the youth word are "scissors" with 60 queries and "Akh" with 50 monthly Google searches.
Search volume as an indicator for the winner - "Goofy" as last year's winner
Last year, the winner of the youth word could already be predicted based on the average search volume. The term "Goofy" led the field with 29,600 monthly Google searches. Ranking and prevailed against competitors such as "Rizz" (28,800 search queries) and "NPC" (23,900 search queries). Terms such as "Diggah" (960 queries) and "Kerl" (600 queries), on the other hand, received less attention.
"Our study shows that a high Search volume is a good indicator for the final winner", explains Niels Stuck, founder and managing director of WOLF OF SEO. "It remains exciting to see whether new terms will prevail in the long term or whether the classics will remain. The large difference of 116,000 queries in the monthly GoogleSearch volume between the first two places makes it clear that the controversial word "talahon" has the potential to establish itself as a defining word for the younger generation."
