Changing New Year's resolutions in Germany: health remains important, but quality time has been catching up in recent years 

Every year, more and more Germans are interested in making New Year's resolutions. We took a closer look at how interest has developed in this country over the past five years and which resolutions have become more popular and which have become less popular. To do this, we analyzed over 600 keywords in the categories "money", "health" and "quality time" over a period of five years in over 3.6 million Google search queries and compared the average search volumes. The result: 

New Year's resolutions in a five-year comparison: health at the top
Germans' New Year's resolutions from 2019 to 2024 show a revealing picture: "health" remains by far the most important category. With 366,060 search queries in 2024, the figure is just below the peak of 2020 (384,740 queries). Compared to 2019 (346,936 queries), the increase in interest amounted to 10.90%. At the same time, the material category "money" lost slightly in importance compared to its peak of 139,617 search queries in 2021, with 127,490 queries in 2024 - a decrease of 8.69%. In contrast, one topic scored well: The "quality time" category recorded a comparatively strong increase of 20.54% between 2019 (107,360 queries) and 2024 (129,410 queries). 

Detailed trends: decline in diets, drinking more water increasingly important
Within the individual categories, there are clear shifts in priorities: search queries for the Keyword "lose weight" in the "Health" category fell from 90,225 (2020) to 58,997 (2024) - a decline of 35%. For the topic of "healthy nutrition" fewer people are interested in Germany - the decline from 39,987 requests (2019) to 18,265 requests (2024) corresponds to 54.32%. At the same time, smaller, everyday resolutions, such as "Drink more water" becomes more important. While there were still 1,511 corresponding search queries in 2019, the Search volume by 47.65 percent to 2,232 requests this year. In the "Money" category, the resolution lost "Investing money" 2024 with a decline of 28.30 percent also strongly Relevance. Also with the "stop smoking" fewer Germans have wanted to do so every year since 2019 - the Search volume after this Keyword decreased by 40.73 percent over the five years analyzed.

About the investigation

For the analysis, the 607 most-searched keywords in the categories "health", "money" and "quality time" in the context of New Year's resolutions were analyzed for their Google search volume.Search volume in Germany examined and evaluated. The study period was December 2019 to December 2014.
